After a three-year wait, Singapore finally had one of its representatives reach the knockout round of the AFC Cup once again courtesy of Tampines Rovers’ excellent run.
They started strongly with triumphs over Lt. Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club Ltd and Selangor FA and, after a blip of a three-match winless run, defeated the Red Giants again by a 1-0 scoreline at the National Stadium to seal a top-two finish in Group E.
On to the Round of 16 and things were not looking good for the Stags against Mohun Bagan as the tie went into extra-time with the score tied at 1-1 and they a man down, but Afiq Yunos emerged as the hero as he swept home a 116th-minute winner to book their place in the quarter-finals.
